Disturbia

Note: This is Ricky Holdman’s first review as an official SquidFlicks author. You may have read his guest submission, a review of Transformers, which also starred Shia LaBeouf!

Intro:

The teenage mind is one of the most confusing objects known to man. What the mind does under pressure, dealing with hormones, and what the mind does under mass amounts of boredom have long been under speculation. Well, we get a pretty accurate view of answers to these questions through the eyes of Director D.J. Caruso (Smallville, The Shield) in his 2007 release “Disturbia”.

Dialogue:

Christopher Landon (Blood and Chocolate, The Flock), son of the multi-talented Michael Landon, wrote the script. Landon manages to keep the concept of an “edge of your seat” thriller by also mixing in some romantic elements and a lot of comic relief. These three elements help keep this movie flowing very smoothly.

Acting:

Shia LaBeouf and Sarah Roemer lead off an all-star cast with some familiar, and rookie, actors/actresses. Shia LaBeouf (Even Stevens) does an amazing job transitioning from the Looney role of Louis Stevens to the more serious role of Kale Brecht. More noticeable names in this blockbuster hit are David Morse (St. Elsewhere, the Green Mile) and Aaron Yoo (American Pastime, 21).

Plot:

After the death of his father, Kale (LaBeouf) is on edge and not himself. His Spanish teacher reprimands Kale when he asks him what his father would think if he could see him now, Kale punches him in the face. Kale is sentecned to three months house arrest, what at first sounded easy, turned out to be hell to Kale. After his Mother cancels his subscriptions to iTunes and Xbox Live, Kale decides to spy on his negiborhood, after showing some juicy findings to his best friend Ronnie (Yoo) they decide to spy on Kale’s new neighbor Ashley ( Roemer). She eventually joins their Stakeout on spying on the neighborhood. But what is at first fun and games turns into being a living nigthmare for the trio when they discover their next door neighbor, Mr. Turner (Morse) is a serial killer, what was once spying for fun is now serious business, after several incidents with the cops not believing Kale, he decides to take matters into his own hands when his mother is abducted by Mr. Turner.

Music:

The music in this film helped the film move along quiet well, Geoff Zanelli did a fantastic job of picking and composing music. The selections went queit well with the pace of the movie. Like when Kale is alone and he finds different things to do, you will hear System of a Down’s “Lonley Day”.

Overall:

Overall, in my personal opinion I believe this was the best movie in 2007, adding different elements to this movie helped this movie become one of the most talked about movies of ’07. The only downfall of this movie is about 2/3 of the way into the movie, it changes paces to a slasher horror film. Besides that negative note, I give this movie two thumbs up in sweetness.
