Maxwell Smart is a dedicated member of CONTROL, yet another secret government spy organization similar to Britain’s MI6 (James Bond, for those of you who don’t know). Max has been trying to become a field agent for over 8 years, but he’s stuck as an analyst of radio and communications chatter from suspected terrorists throughout the world.
Max stumbles upon a lead with a once believed to be defunct criminal organization, KAOS. Nobody takes his threat seriously, except for his friends – Tech specialists Bruce and Lloyd, as well as the famous Agent 23.
Max finally gets his chance to work in the field after CONTROL HQ is infiltrated by KAOS operatives. The breach leads to the death of many CONTROL agents in the field because their identities were revealed. The only hope CONTROL has to stop KAOS and their nuclear weapons stockpile is the unknown Agent 86 (Max) and Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway), who recently underwent extensive plastic surgery to conceal a previously revealed identity.
The two are sent to stop KAOS from reaching its goals by finding their uranium enrichment plant in, where else, Russia. =)
While on the trip to Moscow, Max gets himself and Agent 99 in a lot of trouble, but somehow they seem to get through it all. At the end of the movie, there are some interesting plot twists that help bring everything together.
Overall, I think that Get Smart is a funny and entertaining tribute to the famous original TV series starring Don Adams. I don’t think you could have found a better person to play the role of bumbling Maxwell Smart than Steve Carell, who plays an equally bumbling role of Regional Manager Micheal Scott in the hit TV series The Office.
This is a great spy, comedy, and action film that parodies the genre and entertains throughout. It’s definitely worth a watch!
